The ‘ Sindhu Netra ‘, a satellite developed by a team of young scientist of DRDO, was launched on 28th February to monitor activities of both military warships and merchant shipping in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

To strengthen the surveillance capabilities, the satellite was launched from ISRO’s PSLV-C51 from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh.

This satellite is automatically capable of indentifying the warships and merchant ships operating in the Indian Ocean Region.

The satellite is also capable of keeping surveillance in areas such as South China Sea or the pirate-infested areas near the Gulf of Aden and the African coast.

Many more satellites would be developed in this series of which Sindhu Netra is the first one that has upgraded the surveillance capacity of the nation. It can keep and surveillance on the border and land area both. Indian security agencies feel the requirement of four to six satellites to keep a close eye on Chinese military both near the border and also all along the Line of Actual Control.

Government has created a Defence Space Agency and also created a Defence Space Research Organization meant to protect the space assets from being attacked by the rival countries.

Government has planned to strengthen and boost the Defence space arm in a significant manner in near future.
