Judima Gets GI Tag

Context-

  • Recently Judima, the wine brewed by the Dimasa community in Assam, has been awarded the geographical indication (GI) tag.
  • The wine which is made from rice and a certain herb is the first beverage from the north-east to earn this label.
  • Judima is intrinsic to the social and cultural life of the Dimasas. It got GI tag 14 years after the ginger of the adjoining karbi Anglong district received its geographical indication.

About GI Tag –

  • A GI is a name or a sign given to certain product that relate to a specific geographical location or origins like a region, town or country.
  • Geographical indications may be regarded as a certification that the particular product is produced as per traditional methods and has specific qualities because of its geographical origin.
  • GI tag in India is governed by Geographical Indications of goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999. It is issued by the Geographical Indications Registry (Chennai).
  • Also, Manipur also saw two of its indigenous products get the GI tag most recently.
  • These are – Tamenglong orange and Hathei chilli.

Benefits of GI Tag -

  1. It provides legal protection to various goods and products, preventing unauthorized uses.
  2. It promotes economic prosperity of producers of goods.
  3. It provides recognition of the product in other states and countries thus boosting exports.
