In News

Global Recycling Day is observed every year on March 18 to create awareness among the masses about the rapid pace at which our natural resources are being used. Global Recycling Day 2021 is celebrated today on 18th March 2021. The day also promotes the concept and practice of recycling.

About

The theme of Global Recycling Day 2021 is ‘Recycling Heroes’. Its main aim is to recognize the people, places and activities that exhibit the importance of recycling in preserving natural resources.

Global Recycling Day was for the first time celebrated in 2018 to help, recognize, and celebrate, the importance of recycling in preserving the Earth’s natural resources. The main mission of Global Recycling Day, as set forth by the Global Recycling Foundation, is to request people not to waste natural resources and to tell leaders of the world about the importance of recycling. The Global Recycling Foundation, in collaboration with the United Nations, works together towards these awareness programmes.

Global Recycling Day is celebrated to spread awareness about the importance of recycling in ensuring a healthy future of our precious planet and saying "Thank You" to the Recycle Heroes. Union Environment Minister, Prakash Javadekar today tweeted, "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover is the new Mantra."

Swachh Survekshan, the government body that keeps check on cleanliness, hygiene and sanitation in villages, cities and towns across India, has tweeted photos and works of a few Recycling Heroes.

Primarily, six types of natural resources are most important, i.e. air, water, oil, natural gas, and minerals. All these natural resources are finite, and they will disappear from the Earth if not used justly, that is why the notion of recycling is important. Recycling is using depleting natural resources and making the ideal use of them. The Global Recycling Day Foundation entitles recycling as the 7th resource.

The Global Recycling Foundation has set up a two-fold mission:

  • To tell world leaders that recycling is simply too important not to be a global issue and a joined, common approach is the urgent need for recycling.
  • To ask people across the planet to think resource, not waste, when it comes to the goods around us - until this happens, we simply won't award recycled goods the true value and repurpose they deserve.
Indore has been the cleanest city under Swachh Survekshan from last five years and recycling has a big role to play. The main focus is to make recycling, reusing and disposing off the waste faster and in a more organised manner.
