Central America hit by Hunger

In News

The United Nations on 23rd February said that Central America is hit by hunger that has increased four times in comparison to 2018.

About

With the ongoing economic crisis going in Central America, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua are worst hit by hunger and that has increased fourfold since2018.

The data released by World Food Programme showed nearly 8 million people across these four countries are facing hunger this year that was 2.2 million in 2018.

COVID and wrath of two hurricanes Eta and Iota have devastated the economy very badly. Around 15% people were surveyed by the World Food Programme who are planning migration-a number just double that of 2018.

World Food Programme

The World Food Programme (WFP) established in 1961 is the leading humanitarian organization saving lives and changing lives, delivering food assistance in emergencies and working with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience.

As the international community has committed to end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition by 2030, one in nine people worldwide still do not have enough to eat. Food and food-related assistance lie at the heart of the struggle to break the cycle of hunger and poverty.

For its efforts to combat hunger, for its contribution to bettering conditions for peace in conflict-affected areas and for acting as a driving force in efforts to prevent the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict, WFP was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2020.
