Why in News?

  • Recently, the Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSE&L), Ministry of Education released the Performance Grading Index (PGI) for States/UTs for 2020-21.

About the PGI

  • It is an index for evidence based comprehensive analysis of school education system across State/UTs.
  • This is the 4th edition of the annual report released by DoSE&L since 2017-18.
  • The PGI structure comprises 1000 points across 70 indicators grouped into 2 categories viz., Outcomes and Governance Management (GM).
  • These 2 categories are further sub classified into 5 domains:
    • Learning Outcomes (LO).
    • Access (A).
    • Infrastructure and Facilities (IF).
    • Equity (E).
    • Governance Process (GP).

Key Findings

  • Ladakh has made improvement of 299 points YoY from 2019-20.
    • It is the highest ever improvement made in single year (moved to Level 4).
  • 6 States and 1 UT made it to the Level 2 (901-950) in 2020-21.
  • No State /UT has achieved Level 1 Score (951-1000).
  • No state has performed below Level 7 in 2020-21.
    • There were 12 States/UTs below Level 7 in 2017-18.
