Info-paedia : National Green Hydrogen Mission

Why in News?

  • Recently, the Union Cabinet approved NGHM with an outlay of over ₹17000 crores.

Key Highlights:

  • NGHM aims to make India a Global Hub for production, utilization and export of Green Hydrogen and its derivatives.
  • Over 95% outlay for SIGHT (Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition) programme.
  • SIGHT programme provides two distinct financial incentive mechanisms-
    • Targeting domestic manufacturing of electrolysers.
    • Production of Green Hydrogen.
  • Implemented by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).

    • Reduction in fossil fuel imports of over ₹ 1 Lac crore.
    • Abatement of 50 MMT annual Greenhouse gas emissions.

Green Hydrogen

  • Hydrogen emits only water when burned thus a clean energy source but its creation could be ‘carbon’ intensive.
  • Based on production methods, hydrogen can be grey, blue, green and a few other types.
  • Green Hydrogen is hydrogen produced by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen using renewable electricity.
