Why in News?

  • Recently, the 5th Kalvari class submarine INS Vagir under Project-75 was delivered to the Indian Navy for Induction.

About Project-75

  • Aimed at indigenous construction of 6 Kalvari (or Scorpene) class diesel-electric attack submarines through technology transfer from Naval Group of France.
  • The submarines are being constructed at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) Mumbai.
  • 4 Submarines- INS Kalvari, Khanderi , Karanj and Vela have already been commissioned.
  • The 6th Submarine INS Vagsheer is undergoing sea trials since April 2022.

Submarine Classification

  • Diesel-Electric Submarines (SSK)
    • Uses electric motors and diesel engines which require air and fuel.
    • Need to resurface more frequently.
    • Vulnerable to detection.
    • Shishumar, Kilo & Kalvari Class Submarines.
  • Nuclear-Powered Attack Submarine (SSN)
    • Can operate under water almost indefinitely.
    • Limited by food supplies for the crew.
    • Equipped with torpedoes, anti-ship cruise missiles etc.
    • India has INS Chakra (leased from Russia).
  • Nuclear-Powered Ballistic Missile Submarine (SSBN)
    • A slow-moving ‘bomber’ and a stealthy launch platform for nuclear weapons.
    • The Arihant and three more SSBNs under construction.
