Why in News?

• India ranked 107 out of 121 countries on the Global Hunger Index released by Concern Worldwide and Welt Hunger Hilfe.

Methodology

• GHI scores are based on the values of four component indicators-
  • Undernourishment (chronic deficiency of dietary energy intake).
  • Child stunting (too short for age).
  • Child wasting (low weight for height).
  • Child mortality.
• Based on the score, countries are classified as ‘low’, ‘moderate’, ‘serious’, ‘alarming’ and ‘extremely alarming’.
• GHI score ranges from Zero (No Hunger) to 100(Extreme hunger).

Key Findings

• India’s GHI score increased from 28.2 in 2014 to 29.1 in 2022.
• India falls behind all South Asian countries barring Afghanistan.
• India's child wasting rate at 19.3%, is the highest for any country in the world.
• 224.3 million People in India considered undernourished.
• Child stunting and Child mortality declined between 2014 and 2022.
