Info-paedia : Decline in HIV Infection Rates

Why in News?

  • Recently, the National AIDS Control Organization (NACO) has revealed that India’s annual rate of HIV infection has declined by 46% between 2010 and 2021 against a global average of 32%.

Key Highlights

  • AIDS-related mortalities have declined by 76% against the global average of 52 %.
  • MoH&FW has released several initiatives- Implementation of HIV and AIDS for Establishment Policy, 2022.
  • National Digital Repository– Resource materials related to HIV and AIDS for the common public.
  • National Data Hub of NACO– Central repository of all approved data of NACO for internal use. #AbNahiChalega campaign to eliminate HIV- related stigma and discrimination.

World AIDS Day & NACO

  • World AIDS Day has been globally observed on 1st December since 1988.
  • Theme of World AIDS Day, 2022 is “Equalize”.

NACO:

  • Nodal agency for activities of National AIDS Control Program (NACP).
  • Functions under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoH&FW).

HIV:

  • HIV is a retrovirus that weakens a person’s immune system by destroying white blood cells (CD4 cells).
  • If HIV is not treated, it can lead to AIDS, a chronic and potentially life-threatening condition.
  • Currently, there is no effective cure for HIV but with proper medical care, HIV can be controlled.
